My New Year's Resolution in 2007 was to learn to swim. I had been a runner for many years, having run races from 5K's to marathons. I had always smugly considered myself a very strong athlete with excellent coordination....that is....until the day I put on a swim cap!
I am sure that Coach Patty Waldron still remembers. I looked about 10 years old in my new suit, bright pink cap and bug-like google eyes when she said "Show me what you've got". Ha. Ha. Ha. Boston Marathoner though I was, I barely made it to the end of the pool and back, doggy paddling and gasping for air all the way. Her eyes gave away the grin she hid behind the piece of paper that she held up in front of her mouth. OMG swimming was so *#!@* hard! Back in the locker room, I laughed at myself for a long, long time. What a wonderfully humbling experience and how great to know that here was something new to learn, and completely WIDE OPEN. I was so indescribably awful, that vast improvement was an ablsolute SURE THING! This was going to be good.
And good it was! I have worked hard and (very) patiently for over 2 years now, and though I still have lots of room for improvement, I can swim actual REAL strokes....free, back, breast and a little fly (with fins). Wow. And I can swim for a long time. I can swim a couple of MILES, and manage to "look" like a "real swimmer". Above all.....I have made some incredibly wonderful friends to boot.
Let's see now, what's next? I'm thinking I'll get a bike! :)
